John and Sidse Johnson

John Johnson Sr. (Americanized from Jorgensen Jorgensen) was born 18 Nov 1820 in Kjabenhavn, Denmark, the son of Jorgen Jensen and Johanne Severine Larsen. He married Sidse Thogersen 2 July 1843 in the Kildebrande Parish in Denmark. She was the daughter of Thorgen Sorensen and Annie Anderson. LDS missionaries converted John and his family in 1856.

The following is from the biography of Niels Johnson. "In 1854 I was hired to a farmer to tend cows, horses and sheep. They were all staked in the summer time. I stayed 8 years til the spring of 1862. In Nov of 1855 my mother came to see me. Father was working close by in a mill and he also came to see me while Mother was there. Father was under the influence of liquor as was very often the case and he told Mother that he had been to a Mormon meeting and wanted to join the Mormon Church if she was willing. She said that she would do just anything if he would quit drinking and he promised her he would if she would go with him and be baptized. In January 1856 they were both baptized. He quit drinking and smoking and never took it up again. It made such an impression on me when I saw the life he had lived that I wanted to join also. On 6 Sep 1857 at the age of twelve, I was baptized and never for a moment have regretted that step."

By 1862 the family had saved enough to go Zion. They reached Hamburg Germany and boarded the ship Athenia and sailed for America on 17 Apr 1862. The family along with the other 480 people had a very hard voyage across the ocean. One of John and Sidse' sons, Hans, died and was buried in the ocean.

They arrived in Salt Lake City 1 Oct 1862 but were so poor that the boys hired out to work for their board. Later the family moved to Brigham City. They came to Bear Lake in Sep 1864 spending the first winter in Paris. In the spring of 1865 they moved to Ovid living in a dugout until they could get a house built.

John was the second superintendent of the Ovid Sunday School, serving in this position from 1871-1878. He served as first counselor to the first bishop of Ovid, Bishop Peter Jensen, from 20 Sep 1877 to 15 July 1888. He was ordained a high priest and set apart as first counselor by Apostle Charles C Rich. John was the first miller of the grist mill in Bear Lake, which was owned by Charles C Rich.

Sidse died 16 Jan 1894 in Ovid and was buried in the Ovid Cemetery. John married a second wife, Miren Anderson, a widow and they had one son named Joseph. John moved to Goshen, in the Snake River Valley in July of 1897. He died there in May 1900 but was brought back to be buried in the Ovid Cemetery.
