Isaac and Sarah Tunks


Isaac Tunks was born 1 Dec 1817 in Leominster, Herefordshire, England the son of Samuel and Ann Tunks. His first wife was Sarah Evans, who was born 1824 also in Leominster.

Sarah did not come to the United States with her husband and her family stayed in England. She was listed in the 1881 Leominster England census as a widow. In the 1911 census she was living with her daughter, Eudora and son in law, George Clemens in Grays Thurrock, Leominster England. She died there in 1914.

 Isaac Tunks emigrated to the United States in 1861 with his son, Isaac and James William, living first in Morgan, Utah. Isaac married his second wife Mariah Laskbrook in 1866 in Morgan Utah, the daughter of Edward Lashbrook and Elizabeth Finch. They settled in Bear Lake valley by 1867 where Isaac taught in the first Ovid school until he died. Isaac operated what was the first lime kiln in Paris and died from poisoning received in this business in 1877.

About noon the public mind was set at rest when Sheriff Frank Wright, returned from Ovid with Mr. Ike Tunks and son, Zeba, who were taken before Judge Kunz, where Chris Olsen and Johns T Peterson went security for their appearance in Court Saturday, January 19 at ten o'clock. The complaint was assault and battery and was sworn to by Prof. John Miles. It is reported that Ike "tunked" the professor's head.

Ike Tunks now walks the streets of Ovid as though he had springs in his heels. Becoming a grandpa evidently makes a man feel pretty big.

Isaac died shortly after living in Ovid for a few years in 1877 and was buried in the Ovid Cemetery. His second wife Mariah born 7 Oct 1843 in Surrey, England died 1 June 1873 and was also buried in the Ovid Cemetery.
