Jacob and Marguritha Tueller
Information comes from History of Bear Lake Pioneers and from census and death records
Jacob Tueller was born in Boltigin, Canton Bern, Switzerland, September 15, 1831. His parents and forefathers for generations had engaged in agriculture and dairying. They were landowners and were considered well to do. After the death of his parents, Jacob and a brother, John K bought the shares of the other members of the family and so became owners of their father's estate. Jacob married Marguritha Kunz December 14, 1854.
About 1861 they were prevailed upon by some relatives to sell their possessions and invest their money in a cotton factory. They went into this business without any previous experience and lost everything they had. They were unprepared to do anything but common labor and wages were meager. They heard of masons needed to work on the Thurner Hotel and so they applied for a job, though they knew nothing of the mason trade. Jacob and his oldest sons worked there until the hotel was finished.

The Tueller brothers and Jacob heard of the Mormon religion and after investigating for some time were baptized on May 30, 1875 in the river Aar by John U Stucki. Jacob's wife was baptized two months later. In the spring of 1877 a company of saints from Switzerland and Germany were leaving and it was decided that Jacob's son Christian, who was just 15 could travel for half fare. A missionary Daniel Seegmiller, arranged for Christian to be sent to his brother who lived in Richfield Utah. Christian lived with this family for two years and then went to St George Utah with Daniel Seegmiller.
The next of Jacob's family to come to America was John. He and his sweetheart Anna Schaffer, were married in the Endowment House August 11, 1881, and moved to Providence Utah. Jacob's brother John K came in June 1882 bringing two of Jacob's children with him, Rudolph and Edward. Two other children Gottlieb and Annie came in May 1883 and finally in June 1884, the parents and two youngest boys, David and Joseph left for America.
Jacob and Marguretha came first to Logan where they inquired where to get work. president Budge told them at stone cutters were wanted to work on the Bear Lake tabernacle in Paris, Idaho. This was the kind of work they had learned in Switzerland so they moved to Paris where eventually all their children joined them. Christian had been attending school in Provo during the winter of 1884 but soon joined his parents.

When the work on the tabernacle was completed they all worked at the mason trade. Besides many homes in Paris and surrounding communities, they worked on the Burgoyne Hotel, the Ed Rich Building with the theatre and store and the Stock and Brennen Building, several churches and schools. Some of the younger sons were sent to the church ranch at Nounan where they helped milk cows and make cheese. Later a cheese factory was started at the Tueller home and all the family assisted in making cheese. As the younger sons grew older, they bought and homesteaded land where Geneva is now and here they started a dairy farm.
Joseph Tueller obtained a musical education and taught music in the public schools of both Paris and Montpelier as well as giving private lessons. The Tueller family were all very musical, Jacob Sr. and all his sons sang together. One of the first orchestras in Bear Lake Valley was composed of Jacob Jr. family. They played for programs and dances all over the valley.

Jacob Sr. worked with his sons at the mason trade until the summer of 1904. In August of that year he was helping a son haul a load of hay when he fell and from injuries received from that fall, he was confined to his bed. Dropsy developed and on the first of November 1904 he died. After his death Marguretha continued to live in her own home for awhile, then she went to live with her son Jacob Jr. During the winter of 1910 she took sick and died on March 12, 1910. They are both buried in the Paris Cemetery.
