Charles and Mary Innes

Information comes from the History of Bear Lake Pioneers by Emma Innes Shepherd

Charles Innes was born 19 June 1779 in Plessey, Durham, England, son of Thomas Innes and Isabella Moore. He married Mary Blench, daughter of Ralph Blench and Hannah Wheatley. on 29 Apr 1805 in Chester Lestreet, Durham England.  Mary died in England and Charles and Thomas immigrated to America in the 1850s.  After joining the church they left McKeesport PA and made it as far as Illinois and spent the winter there.  They joined the John Murdock Ox Cart Company at Florence Nebraska in July 1861.  They arrived in Salt Lake City 12 Sep 1861.  At the time they crossed the plains, Charles was 82 years old and walked all the way. Charles and Thomas were called by Brigham Young to settle Harrisville Ut near Ogden.

The Innes family arrived in Bear Lake in 1864 and it was the hardest winter for all the pioneers.  Supplies were low and wheat was frozen. Charles helped build the first meeting place, a one room log cabin, and hewed the benches by hand from solid logs.  He died in Paris 21 Jan 1871.

Thomas Innes studied at England becoming a well educated man.  He worked as a mining engineer in McKeesport PA and was inspector of mines.  After arriving in Bear Lake, he had no knowledge of farming and knew nothing about machinery or animals.  He lost some of hearing so could not teach.  Thomas died 10 May 1889 in Paris.

His wife Margaret Jane Louttit was born in Sunderland England 17 Sep 1829, the daughter of James and Mary (Mouton). She was active in nursing during diphtheria and typhoid epidemics and helped bring many children into the world.  In 1879 she was chosen by Apostle Charles C Rich to be the president of the First Ward Relief Society, in which she served 17 years. Margaret died 21 Sep 1909 in Paris.
