William Leonard Vermaas
William Leonard “Bill” Vermaas passed away December 12, 2017. He was born June 23, 1950 in Logan, Cache, Utah, son of William Vermaas and Marie Berrey. He played football for the Bear Lake Bears and the trumpet, graduating from Bear Lake High School in Montpelier, Idaho in 1968.
He attended Idaho State University for one year before going to work for the Idaho Transportation Department in Pocatello in 1970. He attended the LDS Institute of Religion, where he met Hanna Louise Akers. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1973, and he transferred back to his home town with the State. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as called to various priesthood callings.
To their union were added five children: John Berrey, Jenny Marie, Leonard Lance, Amanda June and Billy Dean Vermaas.
In December 1986 Bill was appointed Maintenance Foreman for the State in Salmon, Idaho and the family moved. Bill became known by his scanner ID # 6-6-0. He retired from the State July 2011. He continued serving in Church callings in Salmon, including Ward Missionary with his wife for two years.
Preceding him in death are his son, John and two brothers Robert and Michael. He is survived by his sisters Mary Paula Beck and Kristen Marie Ellis; his wife Hanna; his four children Jenny, Lance, Amanda and Billy; and 18 grandchildren.
Viewing will be Sunday, December 17th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Jones & Casey Funeral Home on 501 Lena Street Salmon, ID. Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 18th in the Salmon Stake Center at 5:00 PM. Interment will be in the Wardboro Cemetery, Bear Lake, Idaho on Tuesday December 19th at 2:00 PM.
Bill was a very kind-hearted man who loved to joke around and spend time with his family. He loved the Lord and his fellow man.
