William and Mary Ann Quayle

Information comes from the History of Bear Lake Pioneers and submitted by Mrs. J V Dunn

William Quayle, a long time resident of Bear Lake County, was born in Douglas, England 24 July 1839, the son of John and Catherine (Killip) Quayle.  John and Catherine were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John Taylor.  They emigrated from Great Britain in 1839.  They filled their part in development of agriculture in their new land of Illinois until 1845. They had great belief in the new development in the west and wanted to be a part of the great enterprise. They were determined to join the companies that were going westward to the land of Zion.  They were members of the John Taylor Company, which was one of the first to take the long and dangerous journey across the plains to Salt Lake City.

He went to California where he spent two years in various occupations.  He engaged in freighting operations crossing the plains ten times with an ox team.  At one time, when the Indians attacked him in Rawlins Wyoming, his horst was shot from under him and his brother John was killed.  After that he began ranching in Cedar Fort Utah for seven years.

On 1 Sep 1874 he went to Dingle and began farming.  He also started a general store in Dingle and a flour mill at the mouth of Montpelier Canyon.  He later operated a mercantile store on the corner of Washington and 8th street which is now occupied by Modern Drug Co.  He married Mary Jane Cook, the daughter of Henry Freeman Cook and Sophronia Strowbridge in 1863 at Cedar Fort.
