William and Emma Irving
Information comes from the History of Bear Lake Pioneers by Vivian Irving Stephens
William Irving was born 22 June 1845 in Alderlea Scotland, the son of John Irving and Elizabeth Herron. His father was a baker by trade, but wages were poor. His mother helped out by working in a weaving mill and when William was a small boy he also went to work at the mill, cleaning linters from under the weaver machines. When he was about 10 years old he went to work on a large estate as a stable boy. He kept the stalls clean and fed the horses. One night he heard two Mormon elders preaching on a street corner. He listened and seemed to feel it was something he wanted to hear. He told his mother and together they investigate and became convinced this was what they wanted. In Sep 1862 they were baptized into the church. The father and brothers would have nothing to do with them. They left their home and sailed across the Atlantic.

William went to work for the Edward Burgoyne Store as a clerk and made several trips to Salt Lake to bring back supplies. He helped to build the fort that was started on the ground where the old Washington School stood. In 1870 his mother passed away, having been ill for some time. In 1879 he married Rebecca Williams. She was born in Wales, the daughter of Thomas Williams and Janet Cozzens. She died six weeks after her second child was born.
