Gives Life in Service of Country

William Orville Evans, 28, son of Mrs. Eliza Evans Nowland of Montpelier, lost his life in the service of his country, December 7, 1941, according to a telegram received by Mrs. Nowland Friday from Rear Admiral Jacobs, Chief of the Bureau of Navigation, Washington DC.

Mrs. Nowland received a telegram December 21, stating that he was "missing following action in performance of his duty and in the service of his county".  Last weeks telegram states that "after an exhaustive search it has been impossible to locate your son and he has therefore been officially declared to have lost his life.  The Department expresses to you its sincere sympathy."

He was at Pearl Harbor.

Memorial Services will be held at 3pm in the Geneva ward chapel on Saturday.  In addition to his mother he is survived by one brother, Edwin L Evans of Evanston Wyoming; two sisters, Mrs. John Gastanago of Mrs. Leon Nate, both of Cokeville; and on half sister, Vivian Nowland of Montpelier.

He was born in Geneva, 6 Feb 1913, where he attended grade school and later moved to Logan, where he went to high school and attended the U. S. A. C.  He enlisted in the US Navy in November 1940.
