T C Wallentine Fire
The Montpelier Examiner, January 3, 1913
The home of T C Wallentine of Dingle, was destroyed by fire last Tuesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Wallentine went to the dance leaving five children at home, ranging in ages from 4 to 11. About 9:30 pm the oldest child, a girl of 11 years, detected the smell of smoke coming from the the bedroom in which other children were asleep.
Going into that room she saw that the wall was ablaze. Fortunately the little girl had the present of mind to arouse her little brothers and sisters and get them out of the room. She then ran to the dance hall as fast as she could and gave the alarm.
Everyone at the dance hall hurried to the rescue but by the time they reached the house the flames had gained such headway, that it was impossible to save anything.
It is believed that the fire started from a quilt which had been hung up to dry behind the bedroom stove.
