DEATH DUE TO HEART AILMENT
Royal Robert Pope, 77, of Garden City, died at 12:30 am Tuesday of a heart ailment in the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital. The son of Robert A and Amanda Lorraine Calder Pope, he was born April 18, 1877 in Fish Haven. Mr. Pope spent his adult life in Garden City operating a farm. Since 1938 when he was gored and severely injured by a bull, Mr. Pope has been in ill health and had undergone several operations.
He was known throughout the valley for his honesty, generosity and sense of humor. Regardless of physical handicaps, he was extremely active and uncomplaining. His church and civic duties were numerous, including that of teacher, counselor and superintendent of ward Sunday School; scout master; counselor and superintendent of YMMIA. He was a High Priest at the time of his death.
He was married to Alice A Teeples, December 9, 1896 in Garden City. The ceremony was solemnized the following spring in the LDS Temple at Logan. Eight children were born to the union. Two of these sons, Fay T and Lynn T Pope, preceded him in death. His wife died on August 30, 1929.
Surviving are his mother, Amanda Pope of Garden City, who will be 96 on April 9; six children, Mrs. Bart (Elva) Satterhwaite, Mrs. Ben E (Marie) Weston and Elden R Pope, all of Garden City; Arden Pope of Sage, Mrs. LaMont (Fern) Pope and Mrs. Owen R (Erma) Stock of Fish Haven; two sisters Mrs. Celia Langford and Mrs. Edith Whittington, both of Garden City; 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 pm Friday in the Garden
City Ward Chapel. The Matthews Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
