DIED FRIDAY
St. Charles Sept 14th: M S Mattson, father of John Mattson,
passed away on Friday last, after several years of illness. He was one of the
early settlers of this valley and endured many of the hardships incident to
pioneer life. He learned the dyers art and at one time while tending the vats,
he accidentally fell into one of the boilers and was covered with the liquid,
all but his head and one arm, and as it boiled he was thrown up sufficient to
get out. For a time his life hung in the balance, but he has said many times he
believe he was spared for a wise purpose.
He afterwards heard and obeyed the gospel. Has filled two missions and he lived and died a faithful Latter Day Saint. Funeral services were held yesterday. The speakers on the occasion were Jeppa Monson, Counselor Ola Transtrum and Bp. E M Pugmire.
Mr. Mattson has within the last 14 months buried his father and mother and his eldest son. The family have the sympathy of the entire community.
