Levi Bird and Polly Chapman Hammond

Levi Bird Hammond who was born 14 June 1821 in Germantown Ohio, the son of Daniel Hammond and Mary Richter. Polly Chapman Bybee was born 28 Oct 1820 in Bryon, Clay Co KY, the daughter of Byram Lee Bybee and Elizabeth Ann Layne. Levi married Polly Chapman Bybee 10 Sep 1840 in Clay Co Indiana. They were sent by Brigham Young to the Bear Lake Valley in 1864. Elder Charles C Rich requested that they go northwest of Paris and settle in Liberty. Levi became the first presiding elder in Liberty. They had a large family of nineteen children.
The first two winters were so severe that they were hardly able to subsist so they were forced to return to the milder climate of Cache Valley. They were responsible for constructing a log cabin in Liberty which is reputed to be the first house built there.

Levi Hammond died 8 Nov 1894 in Wilford Idaho. Polly died 7 Aug 1902 in Wilford and both were buried in the Wilford Cemetery.
