Joshua Jarvis was born 27 Jan 1840 in London England, the son of Henry Jarvis and Elizabeth Turner.  As a boy he went to school in Lindsell England until thirteen years of age.  He then secured employment in a dry good store just off St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Mary Ann Johnson was also born in London England on 10 mar 1840, the daughter of George Johnson and Mary Keenan. Her father was a seaman who died in the West Indies with yellow fever.  Her mother remarried and Mary Ann was sent to live with her father's sister Selina Morrell, where she learned the trade of a seamstress, making fancy collars and covered buttons.  She met Joshua at the White Chapel branch of the Episcopal Church where they both attended.  In the summer of 1860, Elder Francis M Lyman brought the gospel to them.  The following April 20, 1861, Elder Lyman married them.  On May 16 1861 they sailed for Zion on the The Monarch of the Sea. They arrived in Salt Lake City 1 Oct 1861.

That winter Joshua worded in a molasses mill and the next spring they were called to Cache Valley. Just before leaving their first child  was born.  In 1865 Joshua and Mary Ann were called to help settle Bear Lake and his parents came with them.  they entered the valley through Emigration Canyon and camped at Strawberry Spring.
