Alexander and Ellen became acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith and helped build the community. Joseph William could remember when the Prophet and his brother were martyred. Driven from Nauvoo they camped at Montrose, then Farmington and then Bonaporte. They moved to Council Bluffs until June 1847 and in Sep to Winter Quarters. They began the trip across the plains in May and arrived in Salt Lake Valley 22 Sep 1848.
Joseph assisted his father in farming, matchmaking, making adobe brick and in building their first home. As a young man Joseph was called to meet a handcart company in need of assistance. Joseph married Elizabeth Cranshaw 2 Jan 1857. She was the daughter of James Cranshaw and Elizabeth Huntington and were also early converts from Preston England. Before Johnston's Army arrival in the Valley in 1858, Alexander, Joseph & others made several trips moving supplies, people and livestock to Provo. After moving back to Salt Lake Joseph spent the following years hauling freight from Colorado to the Valley. In 1864 Joseph was called to help settle the Bear Lake Valley. So they left Salt Lake and moved the family to Paris. His mother Ellen died 14 Dec 1870 in Salt Lake and his father Alexander died 15 Dec 1883 in Salt Lake.
