Joseph was working as a carpenter in his home community when President Lincoln issued his call for 100,000 volunteers in 1861.  He immediately responded to the call, as did four brothers and a step brother.  They enlisted in the 24th Indiana Infantry.  Joseph served during the four years of the war, his regiment being in some of the hottest battles of the war, including that of Gettysburg.

He married Annie Laurie Hatton in 1885 in Shoshone Idaho. She was born 21 Apr 1862 in Stockcross, Berkshire, England, the daughter of Thomas Joseph Hatton and Mary Johnson. They immigrated in 1884. She died 19 May 1922 in Montpelier and was buried in the Montpelier Cemetery.  They adopted a son from Kansas.
