Idaho State Journal, 26 March 2009

PRESTON - Jon Wesley Hyde, 72, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Franklin County Medical Center in Preston of complications from cancer. He was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Logan, Utah, to Wesley H. and Oneta Hall Hyde. He married Linda Simmonds on Aug. 15, 1958, in the Idaho Falls Temple.

His early years were spent in Fairview, Idaho, where he enjoyed growing up in a farming community. During his years at Preston High School he enjoyed all sports and was selected the outstanding athlete his senior year. He attended Utah State University for the next four years on a football scholarship. After graduation in 1959, he served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer with the rank of First Lieutenant until his discharge in 1962.

He taught school and coached in the Bear Lake Valley for 17 years at both Fielding High School and Bear Lake High School. In October of 1973, the Bear Lake High School football field was given the name of "Jon W. Hyde Field." He served as police commissioner for four years while a member of the Montpelier City Council. He also served as bishop of the Montpelier Third Ward.

Jon left Montpelier and returned to Preston in 1980, where he taught and coached at the Jefferson Middle School and Preston Junior High School until his retirement in 1998. Jon served as bishop of the Preston Eighth Ward. Jon was an avid sportsman. He loved playing baseball, softball, football and basketball in his younger years. He continued playing "outlaw" basketball and fast pitch softball way past most other men his age. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. Later, he spent most of his recreation time playing golf or target shooting.

He was an avid reader, which helped him get through the winter months between golf seasons. He had also been serving in the Logan Temple and cherished his service there and those whom he worked with. He also loved the many, many trips he and Linda made to see their grandsons play ball. They never missed a chance to see their grandsons participate in a school, church or civic event.

Jon is survived by his wife, Linda, of Preston; a son, Kyle (Gay) Hyde, of Logan, Utah; three grandsons, Tyson (Amy) Hyde, of Logan, Utah, Andrew (Ali) Hyde, of Logan, Utah, Elder Wesley D. Hyde, (England Manchester LDS Mission); a great-grandson, Dylan; two brothers, Sid (LaNae) Hyde, of Smithfield, Utah, Brian (Kathy) Hyde, of Preston; and one sister, Jolene (Norm) Corbridge, of Provo, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at noon in the Preston Eighth Ward LDS Chapel.
