John William Barrett

Montpelier Examiner, Thursday, 26 April 1934, page 1

The people of Montpelier and the county were shocked Tuesday morning when the news of John W Barrett's death became known. It appears that Mr. Barrett in company with Mike Knutti, "Tod" Toomer and Max Jones left Monday afternoon for a fishing trip on Thomas Fork up Salt Canyon. On arriving all the party started out up and down the creek in quest of trout. Along towards evening, when it had been agreed the party would start home, John had not returned to the car.

After a short wait the others began a search for him which continued until dark. Fearing some serious accident had befallen him, it was decided to send word in this city for help. Sheriff Athay with Eddie Rather, responded as well as others in and near the scene. About ten o'clock Mr. Toomer found Mr. Barrett's body in the creek. Whether death was from drowning or from a heart attack could not be determined as there was no doctor present. The remains were brought to this city and prepared for burial by the Williams mortuary. A further search the next day revealed his fishing rod and hat some distance above where the body was located. He had two fish in his basket.

The deceased was one of Bear Lake's best known citizens and business men, being president of the J W Barrett company and he has been connected with the business for more than 25 years. Besides hi wife, he is survived by two children, Marjean and John T, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barrett, and four sisters, Mrs. Florence buck and Miss Lauren Barrett of this city and Mrs. Joseph Smith of Ogden and Mrs. Jennie Merrill of California and many other relatives.

John W Barrett was born in Montpelier 47 years ago and had lived most of his life in this city. Early in life he began work for Mose Lewis in his store and ever since has remained in the business, first as an employee and later as part owner and manager. Funeral services are being conducted today at 3 pm at the tabernacle in this city. Interment will be in the city cemetery in the Barrett plot.

Mose Lewis, of the J W Barrett company, came up from Ogden Tuesday for a short business trip. He had phoned John Barrett he was coming and John had replied he would go out and catch him a mess of trout for his supper. Mose got here about 5 pm and was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Barrett, waiting for John and the fish when word was sent that Mr. Barrett was lost and searchers were looking for him.

Mose was overcome by the death of his long time friend and business associate. He will remain here for several days assisting Mrs. Barrett in getting Mr. Barrett's business affairs arranged.
