Dr. John A Aulguire

The Paris Post, Friday, 31 July 1908, page 1

The people of Bear Lake Valley were greatly shocked to learn early this week that Dr. Alguire (sic) had been almost blown to pieces at his home in Pocatello early Sunday morning. It appears that he was lying in bed about 2 o'clock when suddenly a terrible explosion occurred in the adjoining room. The force of the explosion blew out the partition, blew the doctor out of bed and drove out the front of the building.

The doctor sustained fatal injuries, his entire body being terribly bruised and burned from head to foot. He lingered in agony and unconsciousness until Tuesday, when he passed away. His wife and son Thomas R were hastily summoned from St Charles and were at his bedside when he died.

Just what caused the explosion is as yet a mystery. there were a gasoline engine, a can of gasoline, and a large number of chemicals in the adjoining room, and scientific authorities claim that the explosion was caused by the chemicals. The furniture and fixtures were almost demolished.

There is a wide belief in Pocatello that some enemy of the deceased threw a bomb into his home, The affair has created wide excitement and the most searching investigation will be made. It is said that threats had been made against the doctor by reason of his aiding to bring certain abortionists to court.

The event is double sad for Mrs. Alguire as her first husband, Thos Rich, was killed by a fall from a horse. The deceased had lived in this region about twenty years and had many friends. The body was taken to St Charles yesterday for burial.

St. Charles, July 28-Dr. Alguire came to St Charles about 20 years ago and taught a class in elocution. He was a fine elocutionist and a very talented man. His body will be brought here for burial.
