Helen Brown Whitman

 

Helen Brown Whitman, 94, passed away Thursday, July 9, 1998, at her home in Ridgewind Residence in Chubbuck. She was born February 22, 1904 at Marshall, Mo. the daughter of C Turner Brown. She began her education in a one room school and completed it at Missouri Valley College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Helen began teaching at Lathrup, Mo. and in 1929 she moved to the west to teach in Idaho at Montpelier High School.

Helen met and and later married Clyde W Whitman, Aug 24, 1929 in Marshall, Mo. He preceded her in death June 7, 1971. She was an active member of the Montpelier Community Presbyterian Church Ladies Aide and Kensington, Order of Eastern Star, receiving the Rose Award, Delta Kappa Gamma, Senior Citizen Volunteer and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Since 1971 until her retirement last year, she was chairman of the Board of the Bear Lake County Library. Helen's philosophy was to do something good for someone every day even when you are feeling poorly.

Helen is survived by three children, Elizabeth Gayle (Calvin) Buhler, Charles W (Barbara) Whitman and Carol Leigh (Rich) Hammett, 13 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving re her sister in law, Martha Brown and nephew, Dr. Glenn W Schoper. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Lloyd and Charles Edwin Brown, a sister, Sarah Brown Moomaw, as well as a grandson, Matthew Drew Whitman and daughter in law, Dorothy Whitman.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 13, in the Matthews Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery. Memorials in Helen's memory may be given to the Bear Lake County Library, Montpelier Senior Citizens Center to the charity of the donor's choice.
