Harold William Phillips

 

Harold William Phillips was born Sep 8, 1920 in Smithfield Utah. He attended Summit Elementary School in Smithfield and while attending school he also worked at weeding and topping beets, shocking grain, hauling hay, cutting and raking, working at the pea vinery, building frames and caring for beehives and delivering handbills for the grocery store.  He attended high school and played basketball for North Cache High School, lettering two years. 

He met his wife Roma Stauffer in the summer of 1938. They got engaged at Christmas and were married in the Logan LDS Temple.  He started college in January of 1939 at Utah State Agricultural College and graduated in 1942 with a degree in biological science.  In 1943 he was inducted into the army and trained as a medic, entered Germany with Patton's 3rd Army in January 1945.  In January of 1946 he was discharged.

In the fall of 1946 he returned to USU for graduate studies and in the fall of 1947 he started teaching at Altamont High School.  Since there were no doctors there he did a lot of doctoring for the people in Altamont.  In May of 1949 he signed a contract to teach biology and chemistry at Montpelier High School.  In 1955, after having completed a master's degree in administration, he applied for the superintendent position in Cokeville, but was offered the principals position at Montpelier High School.

Approximately 2,634 students graduated from Montpelier and Bear Lake High Schools while he was principal.  He retired on July 1, 1980.
