EARLY DAY MAYOR OF MONTPELIER DIES
Franklin Jacob Jones, 91, life long resident of Bear Lake County, pioneer, merchant, rancher and early Montpelier mayor, died Monday in the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital of causes incident to age. He was born April 28, 1867 in Bloomington, the son of Jacob and Ann Collier Jones. He was the first white child born in that community.
Mr. Jones owned and operated Frank Jones and Sons Market as senior partner, which was in continuous operation from 1889 to 1951. Active in civic affairs, he served as councilman and was mayor from 1909-1911. He was instrumental in securing Montpelier's early water works system.
His marriage to Mary Eliza (May) Lee in Montpelier was on June 7, 1893. Mrs. Jones died May 8, 1930. He was also preceded in death by six children. He was a member of the LDS Church. Surviving are two sons and one daughter; Delbert A Jones and Thomas W Jones, both of Montpelier and Mrs. Fred (Edna) Muldoon of Oxnard California; 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 am Friday in the
Montpelier Second Ward Chapel with Bishop Leland J Muir conducting.
Interment will be in the Montpelier cemetery. The Matthews Mortuary is in
charge of arrangements.
