Frances Martin and Irene Pomeroy

Information comes from History of Bear Lake Pioneers by Hazel P Millett, Jetta P Tyrrel, Zula R Cole and Gertrude R Price published in 1968.  This is a condensed version.

Francis Martin Pomeroy was born 22 Feb 1822 in Somers Connecticut, the son of Martin and Sybil (Hunt).  When he was fourteen he decided to go to sea and signed onto a whaling ship.  He began by scrubbing the deck and worked up to first mate.  He learned to swim and became adept at the wheel and the harpoon.  After sailing for six years the ship was dashed against the rocks in a violent storm off the coast of Peru.  Francis was found unconscious on the shore by two Spaniards.  He learned Spanish from the family and after a stay of two years he left them to return home.

At New Salem, Mass. he stopped to work at a sawmill owned by Ashbell Haskell.  Here he fell in love with Haskell's daughter Irene, who with her mother, Ursula, had joined the Mormon church.  Francis was converted and he and Irene were married in July 1844.  Francis and Irene left for Nauvoo and arrived there in May 1845.  They were soon joined by Ursula and son Thales.  The father, Ashbell has sailed on the Brooklyn for California.  Francis was chosen to go west with Brigham Young and the first group of pioneers.

The family settled in the Salt Lake valley and constructed an adobe house.  They housed a delegation from Mexico and Francis served as interpreter when they conferred with Brigham Young.  Francis married his second wife Sarah Matilda Colburn 30 Apr 1853 and his third Jessamine Elizabeth Routledge 22 Feb 1857.  Francis moved all his family south when Johnston's army moved toward Utah. Irene died in 1860.

Francis helped build a sawmill, a shingle mill and a grist mill.  He prepared the first stone burrs that were used for grinding flour in the mill.  He built his homes on Canyon Street in Paris.  By 1871 he brought Mrs. Haskell and his twins to Paris.  He built a lean to on Matilda's home for them.  After more than 13 years in Bear Lake Francis' rheumatism seemed to worsen.  After careful consideration he moved to Arizona in 1878, helping found the town of Mesa. He died there 29 Oct 1886.
