Ephraim Jones
Information comes from Treasured Tidbits of Time by Pat
Wilde published 1977, page 168
In Bern, the early settlers brought an outsider, Ephraim Jones to
teach their children the English language. The first schools were held in
private homes and were frequently governed by the same number of children being
taught. If a family had one child, the teacher stayed in that house for
one week.
If they had four, the stay was for four weeks.
