PIONEER RESIDENT BURIED IN PARIS
 

Mrs. Emily Matthews Rich, 88, pioneer resident of Bear Lake County, died last Friday at the home of her step daughter, Mrs. Hazel R Shepherd in Logan, Utah, of causes incident to age.  She was born in Grantsville, Tooele County, Utah, July 9, 1869 a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Keetch Matthews.  When she was a year old her family was called by Brigham Young to settle Bear Lake Valley and they made their home in Liberty.

She attended the old Brigham Young College in Logan and on July 1, 1896 was married to William L Rich in the Logan Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  They made their home in Paris, where they were prominent in church and civic capacities for many years.  Her husband died June 1, 1928.  In 1944 Mrs. Rich received a certificate of award from the LDS Primary General Board for serving in the Primary Association continuously for 50 years.  She was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

She was the mother of seven sons and daughters, five of whom survive; Clarence M Rich, Paris; Miss Naomi Rich, Provo; Mrs. Howard B (Lois) Gundersen and Miss Edith Rich, Salt Lake City and Lyle M Rich, San Francisco.  She is also survived by six stepsons and stepdaughters, Mrs. Shepherd, Mrs. Zula R Cole, Lyman H Rich and Judge Jesse P Rich, Logan; Mrs. Fred J (Gertrude) Price and Mrs. M M (Iris) Collings, Paris; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters Mrs. James A Hymas, A H Matthews and H K Matthews, Liberty, Mrs. George Shepherd, Montpelier and Mrs. Ray Crook, Afton, Wyoming.

Services were held at 1 pm Tuesday in the Paris First ward chapel with Bishop Morris Athay officiating. The opening song "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" was by a quartet comprised of Leanora Stucki, Darlene Rich, John W Spencer and Rollo Nye, accompanied by Mrs. Sharp Matthews; invocation Bishop Dan C Rich; remarks Bishop Athay; tribute by Daughters of Utah Pioneers Mrs. Asa Athay; vocal solo "The Lord's Prayer" Lothair Rich, accompanied by Ruby Bolton; speaker Eldon Cook; violin solo, Cleone Rich Eccles, accompanied by Clarie Matthies; speaker President William K Matthews; song "Oh My Father" quarter; benediction, Fred J Price. The prelude and postlude were played by Mrs. Sharp Matthews. Dr. Edward I Rich offered the prayer at home.

Interment was in the Paris cemetery and the grave was dedicated by Jesse P Rich. The Matthews Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
