Charles W Thompson, of Montpelier's old time residents and a former Indian war veteran, died in this city last Friday morning, after a lingering illness, due to old age debility. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Community Church. Rev Phipps conducting the same. The local American Legion post had charge of the rites at the graveyard, where Mr. Thompson was given all the honors of a soldier. The Williams Mortuary arranged the funeral.
Mr. Thompson was born November 26, 1843 in Louisa County, Iowa, and moved with his parents to Missouri when a child. Her served in a home guard company the latter part of the Civil War and in the Nineteenth Kansas Cavalry under General George A Custer from October 19, 1868 until April 18, 1869, during which time they were actively engaged fighting the Indians. He came to this city in 1891 where he was employed by the Union Pacific system in various capacities until his retirement.
He is survived by his widow and four sons and daughters: R O Thompson, Blackfoot, Idaho; J C Thompson, Ruksville, Nevada; Mrs. J B Hundrup, Ponery, Washington, Mrs. A O Huckins, Sundance, Wyoming, and a brother W O Thompson, St Marys Idaho.
