FORMER SHERIFF
Asa Athay, 84, well-known Bear Lake county resident, died
suddenly Sunday afternoon at his home in Paris. Mr. Athay was born March 4, 1875
in Paris, the eighth child in the family of James Athay and Ellen Morris,
pioneer Paris residents. Mr. Athay served 26 years in the sheriff's office of
Bear Lake county. He served first as deputy to Joel Rich, 1911-1913, from
1913-1915 under Chris Olsen. He was elected sheriff for the first time in 1914
and after various terms, retired in January 1941.
He received his schooling in Paris and served a two year mission with the LDS Church in California fro 1897 to 1899. He was senior president for the Seventies Quorum of Bear Lake stake for a number of years and is a member of the High Priests Quorum at the time of his death. Mr. Athay and Amy Munk were married February 26, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple. She with the following four children survives him: Ralph A Athay with the Armed Forces in Africa, Mrs. Robert (Lois) Linnell of Lakewood Calif. Ruth Athay, Provo; Mrs. Howard (Mary Ellen) Bolton of Paris and two grandsons and one sister, Mrs. J A Wallis of Ogden.
Services were at two pm today in the Paris First Ward LDS Chapel.
