PIONEER
Mrs. Annie Hillier died last Saturday morning at the home of her
son, John, in this city, and thus another one of Bear Lake Valley's pioneers
joined the silent majority. Death came to Mrs. Hillier after more than a years
illness, for 14 months of which time she was confined to her bed and required
the constant care of someone. For weeks members of the family had done
everything possible to make her final days comfortable.
Mrs. Hillier was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Lashbrook. She was born in Sussex in the county of Surry, England, on Sept. 6, 1841. She grew to womanhood in the country of her nativity and on Nov 25, was united in marriage to George C Hillier in St James Church in the Parish of Croydon, county of Surry. Mr. and Mrs. Hillier cam to this country in 1865, arriving in Salt Lake in the fall of that year, after experiencing many hardships in crossing the plains. They remained in Salt Lake until the spring of 1871 when they came to Bear Lake and settled at Ovid.
They following year they moved to Montpelier where they resided until about ten years ago when they removed to Union, Oregon, where Mr. Hillier died eight years ago last January. After his death Mrs. Hillier returned to Montpelier, where she had resided every since.
Mrs. Hillier was the mother of eight daughters and four sons, only four of whom survive her, John, Nettie and Mrs. W H Ridd of this city and Henry McGrath, Canada. In the early days before there was a doctor in this valley, Mrs. Hillier acted as midwife and general nurse for the sick. She continued in this work in later years until her health compelled her to do so died she refuse to respond to the call of the sick.
Her funeral services were held at the First ward meeting house last Monday afternoon. The speakers who were her old friends and neighbors all referred to the good work the deceased had done in caring for the sick. Her remains were consigned to their final resting place in the city cemetery beside those of her husband.
