DEATH
At the home of her daughter, Ms. Daniel Hurley last Monday
afternoon at 2:25 o'clock, Mrs. Alice Macken, one of the pioneers of Idaho,
peacefully passed to that sleep from which there is no awakening. Mrs. Macken's
death came as a surprise to all, even her children, all of whom except one son,
had been constant attendants at her bedside after she was taken ill on Wednesday
evening of last week. She had an attack of the grippe, but thought she was
recovered and went about her work as usual.
That evening she was taken ill and the physician announced that she was suffering from pneumonia. Mrs. Macken was born in the city of Limerick Ireland June 18, 1851. She came to the United States when a young girl and located in Michigan. It was there she met and married Daniel Ryan. In the early 80s they came to Idaho, Mr. Ryan being engaged in construction work on the Oregon Short Line Railroad which was then being built through this state. They remained in Montpelier for several years and then went to Huntington Oregon. While residing there Mr. Ryan met his death in Baker City, leaving the deceased with six children depending solely upon her for their support.
A few years later Mrs. Ryan married John Macken and the family returned to Montpelier where she and her children have since resided. Deceased is survived by Mr. Macken and six children, William J, John M, Dan C and James P and D J Hurley and C B Gove.
Her funeral services were held from the Catholic church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock and her remains consigned to their final resting place in the city cemetery.
