DEATH OF PARIS BUSINESS MAN
Alfred William Shepherd, 69, widely known Paris business man, religious, school, civic and American Legion leader died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon. Death came near Brigham City while en route in an automobile to Salt Lake City with Mrs. Shepherd. The son of Joseph R and Rose Budge Shepherd, he was born February 21, 1887 in Paris. There he resided his entire life, taking over the management of the family founded Shepherd Hardware and Implement store in 1919.
A worker in many fields for the betterment of fellow men, Mr. Shepherd was active in the LDS Church having served as Bear Lake Stake Sunday School superintendent, was a member of the High Council and served as bishop of the Paris Second Ward. His other activities include Boy Scout work and years of service with the American Legion on post, department and national scale. He was district commander and a national executive committeeman.
For a number of years he was a trustee of the old Independent Rural Fielding High School district and also served for a while as an original trustee on the reorganized Class A district. At time of death he was a member of the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital, a position he had held since creation of the board. Active in city government, he served 18 years as councilman and three terms as mayor of Paris.
Mr. Shepherd married Emma Innes, May 21, 1919 in the LDS Temple, Logan. Besides his widow, survivors are two children, Douglas A Shepherd of Kalamazoo Michigan and Mrs. William H (Lucille) Stell of Bountiful; two brothers, Harold Shepherd of Los Altos, California; four sisters Mrs. Edward (Louise) Clark of Nampa, Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Howell of Caldwell, Mrs. Edwin (Eva) Spencer of Magna Utah, and Mrs. Luther (Celia) Pedersen of Logan; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 pm Saturday in the
Bear Lake stake tabernacle with the Matthews Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
The family will appreciate memorials to the Primary Children's Hospital or to
the Paris Second ward building fund.
